We have to ask ourselves hard questions sometime. When we know there is a better way to do business and we refuse to do what is needed do we really care if our guest are safer. Continuous belay systems do not allow guest to disconnect from the safety system accidentally or on purpose. Proper guide to guest ratios and guide training is necessary to insure guest safety. When we compromise on these well known safety needs we compromise guest safety and the future of our industry.
Safety is built on a foundation of good construction. AANSI has adopted ACCT guidelines for construction, policy and procedures. The next building block for safety is good policies and procedures established by certified and experienced consultants. Trained staff is the next block. Staff need to be trained and drilled in policy and procedures. Staff needs to understand safety will not be compromised. In addition to park operations your guides need to have training in emergency response. An emergency response plan shall be a part of your policy and procedures. All guides should have basic first responder training in First Aid or Wilderness First Responder. Some of your lead guide should be Emergency Medical Technicians. Guides must be trained in high line rescue.
Regular and routine inspections are a keystone to safety. Each course is required to have a certified ACCT inspector to inspect the course each year.
